Enter: Mêlée
Haterade and RyMil Productions present: The Malört Mêlée. A winner-take-all bartending competition featuring cocktails with Jeppson’s Malört, all set to live music from local rock/soul trio Black Stacey and benefiting the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA)
Like it or love it, Jeppson’s Malört is a Midwest tradition—be it rite of passage or the hair of the dog that bit you, Malört has been defining the Chicago drinking experience for decades. Now that it’s spread like an invasive weed throughout the region, it’s time to showcase this spirit and present it on the brass tray it deserves.
Competition Guidelines
To enter the Mêlée, each participant must submit an original cocktail highlighting the versatility and nuance of Malört while following these guidelines:
-
Use THIS FORM to submit your recipe, personal information and a photograph of the finished drink
-
All recipes must include a minimum of 1 oz of Malört. Malört must be the primary ingredient, meaning all other ingredients must be equal to or less than the volume of Malört. i. e. A 3-ingredient cocktail may look like this: 1 oz Malört, 1 oz spirit, .75 oz juice; but not like this: 1.5 oz spirit, 1 oz Malört, .75 oz juice.
-
The total volume of the recipe must be a minimum of 3 oz, and not to exceed 5 oz.
-
The recipe must be limited to seven total ingredients, including garnish.
-
All recipes will include: list of ingredients, method, glassware, ice, etc.
-
Subrecipes for any and all ingredients must be submitted to the judging panel if selected as a semi-finalist.
-
All submissions must be received by October 24, 2021
-
All entrants must be available to attend the semi-final and final rounds in Kansas City on the evening of November 4, 2021.
Judging & Prizes
On October 25, a panel of judges will review all entrants’ submissions, blindly. Using the following criteria, six semi-finalists will be selected to compete at the live event on November 4:
-
Use of Malört in the cocktail
-
Attention to detail, ability to follow the rules
-
Overall balance of the recipe
-
Appearance and functionality
-
Bravery
If selected as a semi-finalist, entrants will be given guidelines to the second and third rounds of competition (to be completed live in front of an audience of Malört fans at the November 4 event). There’s more than just bragging rights on the line: the winning bartender will receive a prize package including airfare to Chicago for two, a two-night hotel stay, and a tour of CH Distillery to see where the Malört is mäde.
